In Eskayel’s signature style, the collection takes shape from Shanan’s beautifully abstract watercolor and ink paintings that offer clever and modern interpretations of traditional surface design.
Kwoma
Shanan Campanaro, Creative Director and Founder of Eskayel, took inspiration from the Oceanic art of the Kwoma tribe (literally means “Men of the Hills”) from the islands of Papua New Guinea, and from her many travels to Indonesia and Bali.
Subtly-colored hues that evoke the spirit of the Kwoma tribe, and whimsically-named in true Eskayel fashion, and features seven brand new patterns.
Like the Surrealists of the 1920’s and 30’s whose bodies of work were inspired by the Melanesian’s abstract art, Campanaro was also directly impacted, specifically by a soaring ceremonial house ceiling she viewed at a museum, intricately decorated with the Kwoma’s indigenous scrollwork carvings and sculptures.
